FAMILY PROMISE (IHN)
WHAT IS FAMILY PROMISE Family Promise is a group of religious congregations providing shelter, meals and compassionate assistance for three to five homeless families (no more than 14 people) one week at a time.
WHERE DO THE FAMILIES STAY During our appointed weeks as Host Congregation, we will house and feed our guests in the St. Thomas More Community Center.
WHAT WILL AN AVERAGE DAY CONSIST OF DURING HOST WEEK? Guests arrive at the Community Center at about 5:00 p.m. Volunteers serve a meal and spend the evening at the Center with the guests. In the morning, guests are awakened by the overnight hosts and served a cold breakfast during the week and a hot breakfast on the weekends. Guests leave about 7:00 a.m. and spend the day at a "day center," a base from which to search for housing, jobs and entitlements.
BREAKFAST HOST TASKS [ Hours: 6:00 a.m. - 7:15 a.m. ] - Put on a nametag and review board for information and/or check with the overnight host for information. - Help guests with breakfast preparation. - Remind guests not to forget their lunches. - Hosts and Guests share in clean up. Family Promise van will arrive at about 7:00 a.m. - Leave building key on outer kitchen counter (hall side) - Turn log book over to van driver.
DINNER HOST TASKS - Arrive with meal at about 5:30 p.m. and serve by 6:00 p.m. Put on a nametag and review board for necessary information and/or check with evening host for information. - Prepare for dinner. Evening host can help you to serve guests. All hosts and guests will eat together. - Everyone will help with the clean up. We do ask however, that for safety purposes smaller children not be in the kitchen. - Tables and chairs can be left in the hall for breakfast. - After dinner would be a good time to remind guests to make lunches for the next day.
EVENING HOST TASKS [ Hours: 5:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. ] - Put on a nametag and review board for necessary information. - Greet guests when they arrive and offer help with whatever they may need. - Dinner hosts will arrive between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. You can help them set up for dinner. - All hosts and guests will eat together. After dinner everyone can help with clean up. We do ask however, that for safety purposes the smaller children not be allowed in the kitchen. - After dinner is a good time for socializing with guests if they want to. If time permits you may set aside nonperishable breakfast items on the counter. - Overnight hosts will arrive about 8:30 p.m. Please pass on information they need with regards to the guests, what rooms they are staying in and where the cots are for the overnight hosts. - Pass on the building key and Family Promise log book.
OVERNIGHT HOST TASKS [ House: 8:30 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. ] - Put on a nametag and review board for necessary information. - Get the key and log book from the evening host. - You may set aside non-perishable breakfast items for the next morning. - 10:00 p.m. is curfew for the guests. Everyone should be in the building unless other arrangements have been made. - 11:00 p.m. Lights out. - 6:00 a.m. wake up guests. Breakfast host will arrive about this time. - Pass key and log book on to the breakfast host as well as any necessary information. - You can spend time with the guests or help parents with children. - Cots are provided for you. - Lock up before you go to bed.
