Christmas In The Fall
Don't you love it
at Christmas when you're able to give someone just what they
need? At St. Thomas More, you can get that feeling
throughout the year as you help hundreds of people in
Southern Nevada by helping our Outreach Committee. This is
our largest outreach program. We invite parishioners to
donate needed items to give early Christmas presents to
those less fortunate.
Family
Promise (IHN)
I.H.N. is a
coalition of many faith communities who house for a week at
a time homeless families at St. Thomas More Community Center
several times a year. As a host site for a week our parish
provides meals, evening shelter, hospitality and support to
families who are temporarily homeless. They stay with us
while they are looking for permanent housing. The unique
focus of this program is to keep families intact during this
time of temporary crisis and to offer them support and
assistance.
Ministers of Care
Do you enjoy
bringing a gift to someone that's priceless? Do you like
brightening other people's days? While this may sound like a
job description for Santa Claus, it's something you can do
at St. Thomas More - just become a Minister of Care. STM
Ministers of Care visit the homebound, sick, elderly and
disabled of our parish that are unable to attend weekly
Mass. By bringing Communion and sharing the news of our
parish community, your short investment of time will reap
immeasurable pleasure on those you visit.
Outreach Projects
Every year
parishioners at St. Thomas More reach out to the needy in
our community through a variety of special one-time outreach
projects. Those include home delivered meals on Thanksgiving
Day to homebound persons, collecting blankets and
supplies for homeless persons, gathering books for the
underprivileged children, stocking food pantries in our
community, Angel Tree Christmas gifts, Christmas stockings
and Easter baskets for children, Back to School clothing and
supplies, and special drives and collections for agencies of
Catholic Charities. Many organizations in the parish
undertake other projects such as making sandwiches weekly
for the working homeless, collecting food for Variety Day
Care Center, Food Baskets and Boxes at Christmas and
Thanksgiving, etc.
Tele-Welcoming Committee
Don't you hate
getting those calls from strangers - telemarketers who
always seem to call at the most inopportune time? Newcomers
to St. Thomas More are also guaranteed of getting a call
from a stranger but one who will soon become a friendly
guide. Shortly after someone registers with our parish, they
receive a call from a parishioner giving them a warm welcome
to St. Thomas More and helping to make joining our parish a
stress-free and friendly experience. The "veteran" fulfills
the function of the "Help" button in a computer program,
answering any questions the newcomer has about STM programs
or procedures. If you have an out going personality and just
a few minutes of free time, you can be part of the solution.
"It is such a wonderful activity that only requires about 30
minutes of time every other month." Besides rolling out the
telephonic welcome mat, members also have periodic social
activities.
Welcome
Sunday
Coffee, lemonade
and donuts are hosted after masses on the first Sunday of
each month. Members of this group set up and serve
refreshments. This is a great committee to meet
parishioners.
